What a plugin actually is
A plugin is one install that makes Claude a specialist for one job. Each one packs three things:
Skills: the know-how. Step-by-step instructions Claude reads when the job comes up.
Commands: jobs you start yourself by typing a slash, like /finance:reconciliation.
Connectors: links to the apps that job lives in, like your CRM, your books or your inbox.
Anthropic publishes fifteen of these for free in one GitHub repo, anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins: Sales, Marketing, Finance, Legal, HR, Customer Support, Operations, Data, Product, Design, Engineering, Enterprise Search, Productivity, Bio Research and Small Business. Every box on the org chart is the same Claude, with a different plugin.
I hired four of them in one afternoon. Nobody asked about dental.
New to this? Start hereWhat you need before you install a plugin
A paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.
The Claude app on the web or desktop. Cowork lives in Claude Desktop.
On Team or Enterprise, an Owner may have to allow plugins first.
Where things go: every prompt below goes into a normal Claude chat or a Cowork task. No code, no terminal.
In a Cowork task, attach your bank statement and your bookkeeping export for the same month, then type:
Paste in Claude Code
/finance:reconciliation cash September
Compare my bank statement to my books for September.
List every difference: checks that haven't cleared, deposits in transit, and bank fees or interest I haven't recorded.
End with the adjusted balance on both sides.
Heads up It also does journal entries, income statements and variance analysis. More
Anthropic's README says it doesn't give financial or tax advice, so have your accountant review anything you file.
/legal:triage-nda
We're a small business receiving this NDA from a supplier.
Classify it GREEN, YELLOW or RED, point to the exact clause for every issue, and tell me what to ask them to change.
GREEN means standard terms. YELLOW means a lawyer should look at a few clauses. RED (for example a hidden non-compete or non-solicit) means don't sign it as is.
Heads up The default rules follow US positions. More
If you're outside the US, add your own playbook in a legal.local.md file in a folder you've shared with Cowork, as the README explains. It drafts. A human signs.
/customer-support:ticket-triage
Customer says: "My wedding flowers arrived wilted and the wedding is Saturday."
Categorize it, set the priority, tell me who should handle it, and draft a calm first reply I can send today.
You get a category, a P1 to P4 priority, a routing suggestion and a suggested reply.
Heads up It gets much better once you connect your help desk or CRM (Intercom, HubSpot and others). More
Without them, paste the order details into the chat.
Customize → Plugins → Small business → Install. Then say "get me started": it asks about your business, connects your first two tools and runs one real job.
Try it
No slash needed. Just ask:
You, to Claude
Who owes me money?
It pulls overdue invoices from your books (QuickBooks, Xero and others) and drafts a reminder for each one: gentle for good customers, firm for repeat late payers. Nothing sends until you say yes.
Heads up It has 44 skills, from payroll prep to job posts and contract review. More
No tools connected yet? It still works from a CSV export, a pasted email or an uploaded PDF.
Small Business is the only hire who asked for more work on day one.
If it still breaks
I can't find Plugins. Plugins need a paid plan. On Team or Enterprise, ask your Owner whether plugins are turned on for you.
The slash command doesn't show up. Type / and look under Plugins. In Cowork you can also type the full name, like /legal:triage-nda.
It says it can't see my data. Open the plugin's Connectors tab and connect the app, or attach the file to the chat.
The output is too generic. Open the plugin and click Customize in the top right. Claude starts a task that rewrites the plugin around your company's tools and words.
I want a department you didn't cover. The same Discover tab has Sales, Marketing, HR, Operations, Data and more. Install them the same way.
Questions people ask
What is a Claude plugin?
A plugin is one install that bundles skills (the know-how for a job), slash commands you can type, connectors to your apps and sometimes sub-agents. Anthropic's department plugins are plain markdown and JSON files, so you can read exactly what each one tells Claude to do.
Are Claude plugins free?
Anthropic's knowledge-work plugins are free and open source (Apache-2.0). Using plugins needs a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise, per Anthropic's help center. The plugins themselves add no extra charge.
Do I need Claude Cowork to use plugins?
No. Anthropic's help center says you can add and use plugins in chat on the web, the Chat tab in Claude Desktop and Claude Cowork, and they sync to Claude Code when you sign in with the same account. Hooks and sub-agents only run in Cowork and Claude Code.
Can the Legal plugin replace a lawyer?
No. Anthropic's own README says it does not provide legal advice and that a licensed attorney should review its analysis before you rely on it. Use it as a fast first pass: it sorts an NDA into green, yellow or red so you know which ones need a lawyer.
Will a plugin send emails or pay bills on its own?
The Small Business plugin's README says every skill pauses before taking action: nothing sends, posts or gets paid without your say-so. With any plugin, keep write and send tools on Needs approval in your connector settings until you trust the results.
Where Ned does his homework
The tools are free. Knowing what to ask them for is the real skill. Professor Glitch teaches it from zero, in order, inside the community: 8 courses and 200+ lessons. These two are where Ned started.
